This is a Substack for those who believe that understanding Chinese history is important.
This Substack shares the stories of China’s history from the 19th and 20th century. It begins with the declining Qing Dynasty as it interacts with foreign powers and faces internal revolts.
It examines China’s longest serving female ruler and China’s attempts to reform under pressure from Japan and the West. Then it shares how the dynasty ended almost peacefully with the Wuchang Uprising, which caused the Xinhai (Chinese Revolution of 1911). The Republic of China was proclaimed, only to face internal divisions and a warlord period. The KMT and Communist Parties then grow together and split. The CPC's armies are encircled and forced on a Long March. Mao Zedong then gains power within the Communists.
